Mississippi is a great state to arrive medical school in. It has a model low cost of living, so you do not have to uneasiness about racking up extra bills or student loans. There are two medical schools in Mississippi, one offers the allopathic MD degree, and the other the osteopathic DO degree. This means that you have your choice of which type of degree you want to get.
The University of Mississippi Medical School is located in Jackson, Mississippi. It is the only provider of MD degrees in the state of Mississippi. They are besides the only school on the state which offers degrees in occupational therapy, dentistry and other medical related professional degrees. They not only offer the MD degree, but also a combined MD / PhD, and combined MD / OMS ( Oral Maxillofacial Surgery ). The MD / OMS degree is only offered by several schools in the country. Please note that entrance to this school has similar requirements to most other medical schools, however, they also require two semesters of math ( college algebra and trigonometry ) and two semesters of English composition and literature.
The other school in Mississippi is the William Carey School of Osteopathic Medicine. This school offers the DO degree. Founded very recently, 2008, it was the first in the area to offer a DO degree. They do not offer any combined degrees to obtain with the DO. They do offer a Masters of Biological Sciences for those looking to strengthen their application to medical schools.
Mississippi is a great place to live and raise a family. There is a lot of wide open space. Did you know that Mississippi is 50 % forest? Due to this, there is a big lumber industry in the state. It is a fairly warm state, both in the summer and the winter. During the hurricane season, there is some chance of damage if you live close to the shore. However, most damage is minimal nowadays, due to safer housing codes and such. This state is famous for both its artists and its musicians. Mississippi Blues are very well known and still alive and well. There is a thriving music scene in much of the state. There is a pure southern culture in this state, so those from the north may take some time to adjust to the differences. Mississippi is also a very agriculture oriented state, cotton and soybeans are their largest agriculture products.
